How Far Is Madinah from Makkah? Distance and Time by Each Mode

The short answer

Madinah is roughly 450 km from Makkah by the Hijrah highway. In a private car the trip usually takes about four and a half to five hours hotel to hotel, including one short stop. The exact figure moves a little depending on where your hotels are, what time you set off and how many breaks you take.

The rest of this article explains where those numbers come from, how the different ways of travelling compare, and the small things that add half an hour here and there.

Where is the distance measured from?

When people quote "450 km", they generally mean the distance between the central areas around the two Holy Mosques. Your real journey starts at your hotel door, and that makes a difference:

  • If you are staying right next to the Haram in Makkah, getting from the centre onto the highway can take a while when traffic is heavy.
  • If your hotel is on the edge of Makkah or near one of the ring roads, you will be on the open road much sooner.
  • At the other end, entering central Madinah and reaching a hotel close to the Prophet's Mosque adds some extra minutes.

In other words, two travellers can make "the same" trip and arrive with half an hour between them, simply because of where they started and finished.

Comparing the ways to travel

ModeApproximate timeWhat to keep in mind
Private car with driver4.5 – 5 hours door to doorYou leave when you choose, stop when you need to, and your luggage stays in one vehicle from start to finish.
Intercity busUsually longer than a carFixed timetables and stations; you will often need a separate ride between the station and your hotel.
Haramain high-speed trainShorter time on the railsAdd the ride to the station, waiting time and the transfer from Madinah station to your hotel. Check current timetables on the official source.

The train is fast between its stations, but the stations are not next to the Holy Mosques, so you still need a car at each end. That is why many families, and anyone with several large suitcases, simply go by car the whole way. If you do take the train, we can drive you to Makkah station and collect you from Madinah station.

What makes the trip longer

  1. Departure time: leaving central Makkah straight after Friday prayer, or after Taraweeh in Ramadan, is much slower than setting off early in the morning.
  2. Stops: one break for prayer and refreshments typically adds 20 to 30 minutes. Families with small children may want two.
  3. Season: during Ramadan and public holidays there are more vehicles on the highway and more congestion at the entrances to both cities.
  4. Checkpoints: you may pass security checkpoints along the way, so keep your passport or ID within reach rather than packed in a suitcase.
  5. Hotel access: some streets near the Haram in both cities have restricted access at busy times, which can mean a short detour.

Other distances pilgrims often ask about

  • Jeddah to Madinah: about 420 km.
  • Jeddah to Makkah: about 80 km.
  • Jeddah Airport to Makkah: about 100 km, typically 60 to 75 minutes.
  • Makkah to Taif: about 90 km via the Al Hada road.

If you are travelling from Madinah to Makkah to perform Umrah, remember that the miqat for those coming from Madinah is Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali). Anyone intending Umrah enters ihram there, so let the driver know in advance and he will stop at the miqat mosque.

Frequently asked questions

Can the trip be done without stopping?

It can, but we recommend at least one break, especially with older passengers or children. The driver will stop whenever you ask.

When is the best time to leave?

Early morning after Fajr works well, or after Isha if you prefer cooler hours. Try to avoid the moments when large crowds are leaving the Haram.

Is it safe to drive at night?

Yes. It is a divided highway with fuel stations and services along the way, and traffic runs around the clock.
