After days of crowds and worship in Makkah or Madinah, some visitors look for somewhere quiet to spend a day or two before flying home. King Abdullah Economic City, on the Red Sea coast north of Jeddah near Rabigh, fits that need well. It is a planned modern city combining residential districts, beaches, sports facilities, a business zone and a major port, and it feels very different from the historic cities.
Who Is It For?
- Families wanting a calm beach and open space for children after Umrah.
- Business visitors connected to the port or the companies in the industrial and commercial zones.
- Sports lovers: the city is known for its golf course and water activities.
- Anyone wanting a short break between Jeddah and Madinah, as it lies roughly on the way.
Getting There
By private car
The city lies north of Jeddah on the coastal road towards Madinah, and the drive from Jeddah usually takes a little over an hour depending on where you start. From Makkah the trip is longer, since you pass through Jeddah first. A private car is useful because the city is spread out, its districts are not walkable from one another, and you will need to get around once you arrive.
KAEC trips are not on our published fare list, so we confirm the price on WhatsApp based on your starting point, vehicle type and whether you need one-way or a return.
By Haramain train
The city has a station on the Haramain line linking Makkah, Jeddah and Madinah, which is a quick option for solo travellers. The station is not right inside the residential districts, though, so you will need transport from the platform to your hotel. Our guide to the Haramain train covers the stations in more detail.
What to Do
The beach and the sea
The beaches are the main draw for most people, and the water at many spots is calm and clear. Some beaches offer simple water activities such as kayaking; check opening times and any fees in advance.
Waterfront neighbourhoods
Some districts are built around canals and marinas, with promenades, restaurants and cafes that make for a pleasant evening stroll in the sea breeze.
Golf and outdoor sport
The city has a well-known golf club, plus walking and cycling paths and green spaces.
The port and business zone
Not a tourist sight in the usual sense, but the reason many business travellers come, and a reflection of the city's economic purpose.
Tips Before You Go
- Entry: the city is gated, and visitors may be asked for proof of purpose such as a hotel booking or prior registration. Check the city's official website before you go.
- Weather: the most comfortable months run from late autumn to spring; summer on the coast is hot and humid.
- Holidays: hotels fill up on weekends and in holiday seasons, so book early.
- Dress: modest clothing in public areas is appropriate, as elsewhere in the Kingdom.
Fitting It Into an Umrah Trip
There are three common ways to work the city into your itinerary:
- Between Makkah and Madinah: instead of driving straight from Makkah to Madinah, stop for a night on the coast and continue north the next day.
- Before flying out of Jeddah: finish Umrah, spend two days by the sea, then head back to Jeddah Airport.
- A day trip from Jeddah: out in the morning, back in the evening, if you are staying in Jeddah.
For the core legs we have fixed per-car fares, such as Makkah to Madinah at 400 SAR for a sedan and Makkah to Jeddah Airport at 190 SAR. See the fare guide for other routes, or our Jeddah taxi page for rides within Jeddah.
A Sample Two-Day Plan
Day one
Leave Makkah after Fajr to beat the heat and traffic, arriving before midday. Check in or drop your bags, spend time on the beach in the late afternoon when the sun softens, and finish with an evening walk along the waterfront.
Day two
A slow morning walking or cycling, then leave after lunch, either north towards Madinah or south to Jeddah Airport. If you have a flight, allow a comfortable margin for the drive and airport formalities.
If you are staying in Makkah and need local rides before the trip, see our Makkah taxi page.
