Why we are not giving you a "top ten" list
Hotel prices and availability in Madinah swing a lot from one season to the next, and a hotel that is perfect for a family with elderly parents may be the wrong choice for a young traveller on his own. So instead of a list of names, this guide explains what we tell our own passengers when they ask: how to read a hotel's location, which questions to ask before you pay, and how to get there without hassle.
The central area and its sides
The Prophet's Mosque is surrounded by wide open plazas, and around them lies the central area, where most of the nearby hotels are. People usually describe it by side:
- North side: many of the large hotels are here, and it is popular because it is close to several of the gates and prayer areas used by women.
- South and west sides: a wide range of price levels, close to markets and restaurants and to the road towards Quba.
- East side: near Baqi' cemetery, with its own mix of options.
There is no universally "best" side. The best one for you is the side closest to the gate you will use most.
Real distance, not advertised distance
Booking sites often quote a distance to "the mosque" without saying where they measured from. What actually matters to you is:
- How many minutes it takes to walk from the hotel door to the nearest gate you will use.
- Whether the route is level and suitable for a wheelchair or pushchair.
- Whether you will be crossing open plazas in full sun during summer.
Open a map and measure from the hotel entrance yourself rather than trusting the headline number. Look at a few satellite and street-level images too; they reveal a lot about the walk.
Questions to ask before you book
- Are there enough lifts for the number of rooms? Around prayer times, the wait for a lift in a big hotel can be long, which matters more than people expect if you are on a high floor.
- Does the room genuinely fit your whole family, and are connecting rooms available?
- What is the check-in time? If you are arriving in the morning from Makkah or Jeddah, ask about early check-in or luggage storage.
- Can a car stop at the entrance, or is there a nearby drop-off point?
- Is breakfast included, and do meal times change during Ramadan?
Travelling with elderly relatives or limited mobility
This is where genuine closeness matters more than any other feature. Choose a hotel with a short, level route to the nearest gate, ask whether the hotel can provide a wheelchair, and request a lower floor if the lifts are known to be busy. It also helps to think about how prayers will be spread across the day: many older pilgrims pray some prayers at the mosque and rest during others, which makes being a few minutes further away less important than it first seems.
Planning your days in Madinah
Most visitors spend between two days and a week in Madinah. Beyond praying at the Prophet's Mosque, many like to visit Quba Mosque, Mount Uhud and other landmarks. These trips are much easier with a car that waits for you and moves you between sites; a ziyarat tour including Wadi Al-Jinn starts from 200 SAR in a sedan. Go early in the morning after Fajr, before the heat builds.
When to book
During Ramadan, especially the last ten nights, and in holiday periods, hotels close to the mosque fill up early and prices rise. Booking weeks or even months ahead gives you far more choice. In quieter months you will find more flexibility on both price and location.
If your hotel is a little further out
Hotels outside the central area are usually cheaper, and some run a shuttle to the Haram. If yours does not, a short car ride solves the problem, particularly for older relatives who cannot manage a long walk five times a day. Rides within Madinah to hotels start from 80 SAR in a sedan.
Getting to your hotel in Madinah
| From | Sedan | Family SUV / van | VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madinah Airport to your hotel | 100 SAR | 200 SAR | 300 SAR |
| Makkah to Madinah | 400 SAR | 600 SAR | 1000 SAR |
| Jeddah to Madinah | 500 SAR | 700 SAR | 1000 SAR |
| Rides within Madinah to hotels | 80 SAR | 150 SAR | 300 SAR |
Fares are per car and paid on arrival. Send us the hotel name and a map pin: some roads around the mosque have managed traffic at prayer times, and the driver knows the closest permitted drop-off point. More on the Madinah taxi and Makkah to Madinah taxi pages.
Frequently asked questions
Which side is best for women?
Many prefer the north side because several women's gates and prayer areas are there, but check which gate is nearest to your specific hotel on a map.
Is the closest hotel always the best choice?
Not always. A hotel a few minutes further away can be quieter, roomier and better value, and the extra walk is small if the route is easy.
I arrived before check-in. What now?
Most hotels will store your luggage. Leave your bags, go and pray, then come back for your room.
How do I book a ride to my hotel?
On WhatsApp at +966582918075 or through the booking page, with your hotel name, arrival time and number of passengers.
