Many visitors reach Madinah after crowded days in Makkah and find a different kind of calm there. You do not need a packed schedule to make the most of it, just a simple plan that shares your time between the Prophet's Mosque, the historic sites and rest. Here is a three-day outline you can stretch or shorten to fit your stay.
Before you arrive: three things to settle early
- Rawdah booking: praying in the Rawdah currently requires an appointment through the Nusuk app, and slots go quickly. Check the app early and keep an eye on availability, and always follow the latest official instructions, as they can change.
- Hotel location: staying in the central area saves long walks or rides for each prayer, which matters a lot with elderly relatives. If women are in your group, ask how close the hotel is to the women's entrances.
- How you will arrive: overland from Makkah, straight from Jeddah airport, or by air into Madinah? Arrange the ride in advance so your visit does not start with a search for a car.
Day one: arrive and settle in
From Makkah it is about 450 km, roughly four and a half to five hours with a short rest stop. If you land at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport, the central area is relatively close. Either way your driver will be waiting, and at the airport he stands in arrivals with your name on a sign.
After check-in, do not push yourself. Pray your first prayer at the Prophet's Mosque, learn which gates are nearest your hotel, and agree a meeting point with your family in case you get separated in the crowds.
Day two: the Prophet's Mosque and Quba
Morning: Masjid Quba
Quba was the first mosque built in Islam, and a hadith mentions the virtue of purifying oneself at home, then coming to pray there. Go early, before the heat and the crowds. It is a short distance from the central area, and a car makes the round trip easy for older travellers and children.
The rest of the day: the Prophet's Mosque
Build the day around your Rawdah appointment and be at the designated gate well before your slot. Afterwards you can send greetings to the Prophet ﷺ and his two companions, may Allah be pleased with them, following the arrangements in place. In the evening, sit in the courtyards after Isha when the air cools.
Day three: a ziyarat tour
A typical tour covers Mount Uhud and the Martyrs' Cemetery, Masjid al-Qiblatayn and the Seven Mosques area near the site of the Battle of the Trench, and some visitors add Wadi Al-Jinn. It usually takes a few hours and is best done in the morning.
At Uhud you can climb the small Archers' Hill to look over the battlefield. These sites are visited for reflection on the Prophet's life; keep to proper etiquette and the authorities' instructions.

Departure day
If you are flying out of Jeddah, the drive takes more than four hours, so leave a wide margin before take-off. If you are heading to Makkah for Umrah, the miqat for people coming from Madinah, Dhul Hulayfah (known as Abyar Ali), is on your way. Details are on the Madinah to Makkah taxi page.
Small things that make a difference
- Weather: summer days are very hot and winter nights can be chilly, so bring a light jacket for Fajr.
- Dates: if you are buying Ajwa or other dates, compare prices at a few shops.
- Walking: the courtyards are vast, so comfortable shoes are a must.
Questions visitors ask
Do I need a permit to pray at the Prophet's Mosque?
Not for the mosque or its courtyards. The Rawdah currently requires a Nusuk booking.
Can I do the ziyarat on the day I arrive?
You can, but after the long drive from Makkah we suggest leaving it for the next morning.
How long is the drive to Jeddah airport?
Usually more than four hours for roughly 420 km, so book the ride to arrive well ahead of your flight.
How do I book?
Send your hotel name and time on WhatsApp, or use the booking page.
