After praying in the Prophet's Mosque and sending salam upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, many visitors want to see the places in Madinah connected with the life of the Prophet. These sites are scattered across the city, some to the south and some to the north, so a private car saves time and spares you finding a new ride at every stop. This article sets out a sensible route and covers what anyone planning the tour needs to know.
A Suggested Route That Follows the City's Geography
This order starts from a hotel near the Prophet's Mosque and moves around the city with as little backtracking as possible. Adjust it as you like:
- Quba Mosque: the first mosque built in Islam, south of the Prophet's Mosque. A hadith states that whoever purifies himself at home and then comes to Quba Mosque and prays there receives a reward like that of an Umrah, which is why visitors like to make it their first stop.
- Masjid al-Qiblatayn: to the northwest, the mosque associated with the change of the qibla from Jerusalem to the Kaaba.
- The Seven Mosques area: near Mount Sal', the site of the Battle of the Trench, including Masjid al-Fath and several small mosques.
- Mount Uhud and the Martyrs' Cemetery: north of the city, site of the Battle of Uhud and resting place of the martyrs, among them Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, with the Archers' Hill nearby.
- Wadi Al-Jinn (optional): an area outside the city to the north, where visitors go to experience the odd sensation of a car seeming to roll uphill. It is a curiosity rather than a religious site.
Many people also like to stop at a date shop or market to buy Madinah dates before heading back to the hotel.
When to Set Out
The best time is usually after Fajr or shortly after sunrise. Madinah gets very hot by midday, especially in summer, and Quba is calmer early in the morning. If you prefer evenings, you can leave after Asr, bearing in mind that daylight fades by the last stops.
The core tour usually takes a few hours depending on how long you spend at each site; adding Wadi Al-Jinn makes it longer because it lies outside the city.
The Fixed Fare
Our price is per car, not per person, covers the ziyarat tour including Wadi Al-Jinn, and is paid at the end:
| Tour | Sedan | Family SUV / Van | VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madinah ziyarat + Wadi Al-Jinn | 200 SAR | 350 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Local ride to Madinah hotels | 80 SAR | 150 SAR | 300 SAR |
For a large family, a family SUV keeps everyone in one vehicle. See the categories on our fleet page.
What to Bring
- Plenty of water, plus a hat or umbrella for exposed stops like Uhud.
- Comfortable shoes; some sites involve a walk from the car park.
- Modest clothing suitable for entering mosques.
- A little cash if you plan to buy dates.
Private Car or Tour Bus?
Group tour buses offering ziyarat trips are easy to find near the Prophet's Mosque, and they suit some visitors. A private car differs in a few ways:
- You set the time: no waiting for the bus to fill and no fixed departure.
- You set the pace: stay longer at Quba or Uhud and skip what does not interest you.
- Pickup at your hotel door: important for older travellers and anyone who finds walking hard.
- Family privacy: you travel together without strangers.
A Comfortable Tour for Elderly Visitors and Wheelchair Users
If you are travelling with an elderly relative or someone using a folding wheelchair, mention it when booking so we can suggest a vehicle with enough space. Ask the driver to stop as close as possible to each entrance, and cut the number of stops if needed; quality matters more than ticking off every site.
Etiquette at the Sites
These places are dear to Muslims. What is recommended is praying in the mosques, greeting the deceased and making dua for them at the Martyrs' Cemetery, and reflecting on the history. Avoid practices without basis, such as wiping walls or taking soil, and follow the instructions of the site staff.
If the Tour Falls on Your Departure Day
Many visitors do the tour on their last morning in Madinah and then leave for Makkah or the airport. Bags can go in a family SUV, but please tell us in advance so we can plan. Madinah to Makkah is 400 SAR for a sedan; see our Madinah to Makkah taxi page. Remember that if you intend Umrah, you enter ihram at Dhul Hulayfah on the way.
