When to Leave Your Makkah Hotel: Working Back From a Jeddah Flight

On the last day of an Umrah trip the same question always comes up: when should I leave the hotel? Leave too early and you spend hours sitting in the terminal; leave too late and you are sprinting to the gate, or worse. The safest approach is to work backwards: start from your flight's departure time and step back until you reach the moment you need to walk out of the hotel.

The backward calculation in four steps

  1. Departure time: take it straight from your ticket.
  2. Subtract check-in time: at least three hours for international flights and two for domestic, or whatever your airline asks if it is more.
  3. Subtract the drive: from central Makkah to King Abdulaziz International Airport is around 100 km, usually about 60–75 minutes in normal conditions.
  4. Subtract a safety margin: 30–60 minutes on ordinary days, more in peak season or on a Friday.

Two worked examples

International flight at 11 pm on an ordinary day

11:00 pm minus 3 hours = at the airport by 8:00 pm. Minus 75 minutes of driving = 6:45 pm. Minus a 45-minute buffer = leave the hotel around 6:00 pm. That leaves time to pray Asr at the Haram and then check out of the hotel calmly.

Domestic flight at 9 am during Ramadan

9:00 am minus 2 hours = at the airport by 7:00 am. Minus 90 minutes of seasonal driving = 5:30 am. Minus a one-hour buffer = leave around 4:30 am. In that case, plan to pray Fajr at a mosque on the way or at the airport, depending on the time.

Send us your flight time and whether it is domestic or international, and we will suggest a pickup time based on the time of day and season.

What can slow you down inside Makkah

  • Leaving the Haram area after prayers: the roads around the central area clog up after the main prayers, especially after Jumu'ah. Avoid timing your departure to coincide with the end of a prayer.
  • Getting to the car: some central hotels have no direct kerbside access, so you may need to walk a short way with your bags to the pickup point. Ask the hotel where the nearest point is and send it to us.
  • Hotel checkout: settle your bill and check out about 15 minutes before the driver is due.

What the ride costs

The fare is per car, not per passenger, starting from 190 SAR in a sedan, and you pay on arrival. Fares for each class and booking are on our Makkah to Jeddah Airport taxi page.

Luggage and Zamzam

Your last day in Makkah usually means your heaviest bags: gifts, dates and Zamzam water. Tell us how many large cases and Zamzam containers you have when you book. If big suitcases outnumber passengers, choose the family class. Also check your airline's rules on carrying Zamzam, as they vary between carriers.

Flying from a different terminal?

King Abdulaziz International Airport has more than one terminal, and the walk between them is not trivial. Check which terminal is printed on your ticket and tell us when you book, so the driver drops you at the right entrance and you don't lose time crossing the airport on foot.

Plan your last day

Many pilgrims like their final act in Makkah to be a tawaf before they travel. If you intend to do that, build it into your timing: tawaf at busy times can take longer than you expect, and afterwards you still need to get back to the hotel and collect your bags. The easiest approach is to pack and settle the hotel bill in the morning or the night before, leave your luggage with reception, go to the Haram with a clear mind, and come back to find everything ready before the driver arrives.

If this is your arrival, not your departure

This guide covers the Makkah-to-airport direction. If you are landing in Jeddah and heading to Makkah, read our Jeddah Airport to Makkah transfer page. For getting around Makkah before your travel day, see taxi in Makkah.

Car or train to the airport?

The Haramain railway links Makkah with Jeddah and its airport, and for a solo traveller with a single bag it can be a good option. The trade-off is the first and last stretch: Makkah's station is not in the central area, so you still need a ride from your hotel to the platform, then a walk with your luggage at the airport end. Departure times are fixed, and in busy periods tickets can sell out. A private car collects you at the hotel, loads everything once, and drops you at the departures entrance of your terminal at the time that suits your flight. For families, older travellers or anyone with Zamzam and several suitcases, that difference usually decides it. If you do take the train, a Makkah taxi can get you to the station; the station run within Makkah has its own fixed fare.

Whichever you choose, the backward calculation above still applies: start from your departure time and work back, adding the station transfer and train schedule instead of the road time.
