NEOM in a nutshell
NEOM is a large-scale development region in Tabuk Province, in the far northwest of Saudi Arabia, bordering the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba. It's one of the flagship projects of Saudi Vision 2030. The core idea is a new model for living and working, built on renewable energy and technology, while keeping the area's coastline, mountains and valleys intact. Many visitors to the Holy Cities hear about NEOM and ask us whether they can visit and how they'd get there from Makkah or Madinah. This article gives a realistic picture, without the hype.
The announced regions
NEOM has announced several areas, each with its own character:
- The Line: a concept for a linear city without conventional car traffic, built around keeping services close to residents.
- Oxagon: an industrial and logistics zone on the Red Sea coast.
- Trojena: a mountain destination in the highlands, with a far cooler climate than most of the Kingdom.
- Sindalah: a Red Sea island aimed at luxury tourism and yachting.
These projects are at different stages of development, and their plans and timelines are revised from time to time. So don't build an itinerary on older articles. Check NEOM's official website and channels to see what is actually open to visitors when you travel.
Does NEOM fit an Umrah trip?
Honestly, it depends on your time. NEOM is a very long way from Makkah and Madinah, and the overland journey runs to many hours. If you have a week or ten days set aside for Umrah and Madinah, it's better to give the two Holy Mosques their due. If you have extra days and love nature and exploring, combining Madinah with AlUla, Tabuk and the northern coast can make a memorable trip, provided you book things in advance.
How visitors usually get there
Most visitors fly into the region through one of the nearby airports and then get around locally. Check current schedules with the airlines, as routes to smaller airports can change with the season. Our part is the bit we cover every day: getting you from your hotel in Makkah or Madinah to the airport, and meeting you when you come back.
| Ride | Sedan | Family | VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Makkah to Jeddah Airport | 190 SAR | 300 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Makkah to Madinah | 400 SAR | 600 SAR | 1000 SAR |
| Madinah to Jeddah Airport | 450 SAR | 700 SAR | 1000 SAR |
| Jeddah Airport to Makkah | 200 SAR | 350 SAR | 500 SAR |
Fares are fixed per car, not per passenger. For long road trips outside these routes, we confirm whether we can do it, and at what fare, on WhatsApp for each request. More routes are in the taxi fare guide.
A sample plan if you have extra days
- Land in Jeddah and go to Makkah for Umrah. The pickup is explained on the Jeddah airport taxi page.
- Move to Madinah for your visit with a Makkah to Madinah taxi.
- Head north by air from Madinah or Jeddah, depending on available flights.
- Return to Jeddah or Madinah, where we can meet you at the airport.
General tips
- The northern highlands can be cold in winter, so pack accordingly.
- Some sites can only be visited with a booking, and some areas are active construction zones that are closed to the public. Don't drive out to a location without confirming first.
- A valid Saudi visa generally lets you travel within the Kingdom, but check your visa's terms with the official source.
- Distances in the north are large and services can be spread out, so plan fuel, food and rest stops if you travel by road.
Common questions
Is NEOM open to tourists now?
Some destinations have started welcoming visitors on a limited basis, while others are still being built. The only reliable reference is NEOM's own official announcements at the time you plan.
Do you drive directly from Makkah to NEOM?
It's a very long distance, and flying is usually the practical option. If you'd like a private road trip, message us and we'll discuss the details and whether it's possible.
What can you do for someone combining Umrah with a trip north?
We cover every ride between Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah and their airports, with fixed fares, payment on arrival, and a name-sign meet in arrivals.
