Date Season in Buraidah: Visitor's Guide to the Qassim Dates Festival

Every harvest season the date market in Buraidah turns into a scene unlike any other market: long rows of vehicles loaded with cartons, auctioneers calling prices at a rapid rhythm, and buyers from across the Kingdom and the Gulf. This article isn't for professional traders. It's for the visitor who wants to experience it and come home with good dates without getting lost in the crowd.

Why Qassim?

The Qassim region in central Saudi Arabia is one of the country's best-known palm-growing areas, and its capital Buraidah hosts one of the largest seasonal date markets anywhere. The festival runs for several weeks as the fruit ripens in late summer. Exact dates change from year to year with the harvest, so check announcements from the organisers in the region before you book travel.

A morning in the market: how the auction runs

  1. Around dawn: vehicles loaded with dates roll into the market and line up. This is the busiest time of day, and the air is kinder than at midday.
  2. Your first walk: before buying anything, walk the rows. Look at colour, size and firmness, and compare several sellers.
  3. The calling: the auctioneer announces prices quickly and buyers raise a hand or nod. Sales here are mostly wholesale.
  4. Buying smaller amounts: head to the retail section or the shops around the market, which suit families and gift shoppers better.

During the season there are usually side activities too, such as stalls run by home producers selling date products like syrup and ma'amoul, and some heritage events.

Buying tips

  • Ask to taste before you buy; it's normal practice.
  • Look into the middle of the carton, not just the top layer.
  • Flying home? Ask about vacuum packing, and check your own country's customs rules on bringing in dates.
  • Carry a card and a little cash.
  • Drink plenty of water. Even early mornings in late summer are hot.

Getting to Buraidah

The region is served by Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Qassim, with domestic flights from several cities. By road:

  • From Riyadh: roughly 330 km on a fast highway, about three and a half hours. See the Riyadh to Qassim route.
  • From Madinah: a long drive, similar in length to Madinah to Makkah. A good fit if you've finished your Madinah visit and want to head east.
  • From Makkah or Jeddah: it's a long way, so flying to Qassim or Riyadh and continuing by car is usually easier.

We don't publish a fixed fare for Qassim routes; the price is confirmed on WhatsApp based on pickup and vehicle. As always, the fare is per car, not per passenger, and paid on arrival. To learn more about the area, see our Qassim and Buraidah pages.

Starting from the Holy Cities

If you're on an Umrah trip and want to add Qassim, a plan like this can work: land in Jeddah, go to Makkah for Umrah, move on to Madinah (Makkah to Madinah: 400 SAR sedan, 600 family, 1000 VIP), then head to Qassim from Madinah. See our Makkah to Madinah taxi page for the middle leg.
