The Red Sea Destination: Getting There and Fitting It Into Your Trip

Hearing the name "Red Sea Project", many visitors picture a single beach resort. In reality it is a large tourism destination on Saudi Arabia's northwest coast, spread across the area between the towns of Umluj and Al Wajh, taking in many islands, coral reefs, sand dunes and mountains. It is being developed by Red Sea Global as part of Vision 2030; some resorts already welcome guests while further phases are still under way.

Rather than dwelling on luxury, this article answers practical questions: where exactly is it, how do you get there, and can you combine it with Umrah without exhausting yourself?

Where Is the Red Sea Destination?

It lies a long way north of Jeddah, with Umluj and Al Wajh as the nearest towns. Because the area is relatively remote from the big cities, planning how to get there is the most important part of the trip. From Jeddah you follow the coastal road north through towns such as Rabigh and Yanbu; from Madinah you head west to the coast and then north.

Getting There: Fly or Drive?

Flying

The destination has its own airport, Red Sea International, served by domestic flights from cities such as Riyadh and Jeddah. Schedules vary by season, so check with airlines before you plan. If a flight fits your dates, this is the quickest option.

Private car

The road trip is long, close to a full day from Jeddah and somewhat shorter from Madinah. It suits travellers who want flexibility, families with lots of luggage, or anyone who likes stopping in the coastal towns. This route is not on our published fare list; we confirm the price on WhatsApp based on your starting point and vehicle.

Getting around once there

Some resorts are on islands reachable only by boat or seaplane arranged by the resort. Check with your hotel where the meeting point is, whether at the airport or a specific marina, so you can plan how to get there.

What to Do

  • Diving and snorkelling: the Red Sea's coral reefs are the region's best-known attraction.
  • Boat trips: between islands and quiet beaches.
  • The desert: some resorts sit among the dunes and offer desert experiences and stargazing.
  • Nature and conservation: the destination emphasises environmental protection, and you may find educational activities around reefs and mangroves.

Best Season to Visit

Roughly autumn through spring is the most comfortable period on the coast. Summer is hot, although the sea breeze makes it more bearable than inland.

Combining It With Umrah

If you want to add the Red Sea to an Umrah trip, there are three common patterns:

  1. Makkah, then Madinah, then the coast: complete Umrah, move to Madinah, then continue to the northern coast, which is closer to Madinah than to Makkah, and fly home from there.
  2. Fly from Jeddah after Umrah: finish in Makkah, head to Jeddah Airport, and fly to Red Sea International.
  3. Start on the coast: relax first and finish with Umrah, a good choice for those who want Makkah to be their final stop.

Tips Before You Go

  • Visa: check what your visa type allows on the official visa portal, as rules can change.
  • Book ahead: access to some islands and zones depends on a confirmed resort reservation.
  • Dress: resorts have their own rules; in towns and airports, modest clothing is appropriate.
  • Fuel and breaks: if driving, plan stops in the coastal towns; it is a long road.
