Booking Rides in Madinah: City Trips and Long-Distance Journeys

Madinah: short hops and one long drive

Getting around during a stay in Madinah usually falls into two kinds of trip: short rides inside the city, from your hotel to Quba, Uhud or the train station, and at least one long journey out of the city towards Makkah or Jeddah. Each is booked a little differently. This guide covers both and shows you what to put in your booking message so the right car turns up at the right time.

City rides: what to know

The ziyarat tour

The most requested ride among visitors. It usually covers Quba Mosque, Mount Uhud and the Uhud martyrs' cemetery, and Masjid al-Qiblatayn, with the option to add Wadi Al-Jinn, known for the effect that makes cars seem to roll on their own. Early morning is the best time, before the heat builds and the sites get busy. If you have elderly passengers, tell the driver so he can choose the easiest drop-off points.

To the train station

Madinah's Haramain train station is outside the central area. Allow time to get there and to go through the station before departure, and don't leave this ride until the last minute.

Hotel to hotel

Some visitors switch hotels mid-stay. The driver helps with the bags and stops at the nearest permitted point if the street has restricted access.

Long journeys: before you book

  • To Makkah for Umrah: about 450 km and roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. Ihram is entered at the Dhul Hulayfah miqat (Abyar Ali) at the start of the route. Ask the driver to stop there. You can put on your ihram garments at the hotel and make your intention at the miqat. More on the Madinah to Makkah taxi page.
  • To Jeddah Airport: about 4 to 4.5 hours. Allow three hours at the airport for an international flight, plus a buffer for the road. In practice, leave around eight hours before take-off.
  • Stops: a prayer or rest stop at a roadside service area is normal on a long trip.

What to write in your booking message

One clear WhatsApp message saves a lot of back and forth. Copy this template and fill it in:

Ride: from ... to ...
Date and time: ...
Passengers: ... adults, ... children
Bags: ... large, ... small
Preferred car: sedan / family / VIP
Notes: (miqat stop, wheelchair, child seat...)

We reply to confirm the car and fare, then send the driver's details before pickup. There's no prepayment for a normal booking.

Choosing a vehicle

A sedan suits two or three passengers with moderate luggage. The family vehicle is for families and anyone carrying a lot of bags, especially on the long run to Makkah or Jeddah. VIP is for extra comfort on a long drive. Compare them on the fleet page, and for the full Madinah service see Madinah taxi.
