When pilgrims plan Umrah they usually think about the visa, flights and hotel, and leave transport to the last minute. In reality, an Umrah trip is a chain of connected journeys, and a delay at any link knocks on to the next. This planner walks through the trip stage by stage, as most pilgrims arriving via Jeddah experience it, with the fixed fare for each ride and the points worth watching.
First, check current visa and permit requirements on official sources such as the Nusuk platform, as they can change from season to season.
Stage One: Landing in Jeddah
Most pilgrims enter ihram on the plane when it passes the miqat, then land at King Abdulaziz International Airport. This is when you most need a car waiting: you are tired, in ihram and carrying luggage.
- The driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with a name sign.
- You have 60 minutes of free waiting after landing for passport control and bags.
- Makkah is about 100 km away, usually an hour to an hour and a quarter by road.

Stage Two: Your Days in Makkah
After Umrah, the everyday rides begin: hotel to Haram if you are further out, a ziyarat tour, or a trip to Taneem or Jaaranah for another Umrah. Cars cannot always reach the mosque gates at busy times, so agree a clear drop-off point with the driver.
For rides around the city, see our Makkah taxi page.
Stage Three: Moving to Madinah
It is about 450 km, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. Pick a time when you are rested and tell the driver if you want to stop to pray or eat. A family vehicle is very comfortable on this long run. Details are on our Makkah to Madinah taxi page.
Stage Four: In Madinah
Besides praying at the Prophet's Mosque, many take a ziyarat tour covering Quba Mosque, Mount Uhud, Masjid al-Qiblatayn and more. If you are returning to Makkah for a second Umrah, you enter ihram at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) on the way.
Stage Five: Back to the Airport
Pilgrims fly home either from Madinah airport or from Jeddah. Book the return ride at least a day ahead, and allow enough time for the drive and airport formalities.

Miqat Points You May Pass
- Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali): for those travelling from Madinah to Makkah.
- Qarn al-Manazil (Al Sail Al Kabir and Wadi Mahram): for those coming from Taif.
- Al Juhfah: for those arriving from the northwest along the coast near Rabigh.
- Yalamlam: for those coming from the south.
Anyone already inside Makkah goes out to the hill, such as Taneem or Jaaranah. For particular situations, ask a scholar.
Train or Car?
The Haramain train is a quick option for solo travellers or couples with light bags, but the Makkah and Madinah stations are some distance from the holy mosques, so you need an extra ride at each end. For families, elderly pilgrims and anyone with lots of luggage, a door-to-door private car is simpler, and the fare is per car rather than per person.
When to Book Early
The last ten nights of Ramadan, the Eid holidays, the period around Hajj, and school holidays. At these times, book several days ahead and send all your details together on WhatsApp.
