A family is not one traveller multiplied by five
An adult travelling alone for Umrah can cope with queues, long walks and late nights. A family is different: there is a child who is exhausted after an hour, a grandmother who cannot walk far, and a parent carrying bags while keeping an eye on everyone. A family needs a different plan: a slower rhythm, deliberate rest, and transport that does not add tiredness on top of tiredness. That is what this guide covers, based on what we see every day with the families we drive.
1. Choosing the season
The cooler months from autumn to early spring are far kinder to children and elderly relatives. If the summer school holiday is your only option, plan Tawaf and Sa'i for late at night or after Fajr. Bear in mind that Ramadan, and particularly its last ten nights, brings very large crowds that can be hard on small children.
2. Arrival day: don't force the Umrah if everyone is exhausted
Many families land after a long flight with children asleep or worn out. If you arrive in ihram, the usual plan is to head to Makkah and perform Umrah, but take some rest at the hotel first if the children or older relatives need it. To make arrival easier, book a car in advance: the driver waits in arrivals with your name on a sign, tracks your flight, and you get 60 minutes of free waiting. Details are on the Jeddah Airport to Makkah transfer page.
3. Choosing the right vehicle
The mistake we see most: a family of five with six suitcases and a pushchair booking a sedan. Choose a family SUV or van whenever there are more than three of you or plenty of luggage, and mention at booking if you need a child seat, along with your child's age.
| Route | Sedan | Family SUV / van | VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeddah Airport to Makkah | 200 SAR | 350 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Makkah to Madinah | 400 SAR | 600 SAR | 1000 SAR |
| Madinah to Makkah | 400 SAR | 600 SAR | 800 SAR |
| Makkah to Taif (round trip) | 400 SAR | 600 SAR | 800 SAR |
Fares are per car, not per person, which is exactly why a private car is good value for families. You pay on arrival. See our fleet and the fare guide.
4. Children at the Haram
- ID card or band: a wristband or a card in your child's pocket with their name, a parent's phone number and the hotel name.
- Morning photo: take a photo of each child every morning in the clothes they are wearing. It helps enormously if you are separated in the crowd.
- A fixed meeting point: agree on a specific gate or clear landmark that anyone who gets lost should return to.
- Pushchair or carrier: for little ones, a pushchair or baby carrier saves a great deal of effort. Where pushchairs are allowed varies by floor and time, so follow the staff's directions.
- Water: Zamzam is available throughout both Holy Mosques; give children small amounts often.
If you would like your child to perform Umrah with you, ask someone whose knowledge you trust, before you travel, about the rulings for a young child's ihram and what a guardian does on their behalf.
5. Elderly relatives
Wheelchairs are available at both Holy Mosques, and there are services to help older pilgrims with Tawaf and Sa'i. Choose a hotel close by with a level route, and do not insist on every prayer in the mosque if it will wear them out. Rest is part of the plan, not a failure of it.
6. Moving to Madinah, and a Taif day trip
The drive to Madinah takes about four and a half hours. Leave after breakfast or time the trip around the children's nap, and stop halfway for a break. Anyone returning from Madinah to Makkah with the intention of Umrah enters ihram at Dhul Hulayfah. Taif, with its milder mountain climate, makes a good day out for children; see Taif taxi.
