Visitors on business in Riyadh usually find that the meetings are the easy part. The hard part is the space between them. The capital is huge, offices are spread across the north, the centre and the east, and a drive that takes fifteen minutes at midday can take an hour when offices empty out. What follows is a checklist built from what we see every day moving travellers around the Kingdom.
Before you fly: three decisions that save hours
1. Choose your hotel by meeting location, not price
If most of your meetings are in the King Abdullah Financial District, staying inside or next to it keeps you off the ring roads. If they are in Olaya, among the older commercial towers and bank headquarters, hotels along King Fahd Road make more sense. For a short stay with an onward flight soon after, the Airport Road hotels cut down your transfer time.
2. Sort out your airport transfer in advance
King Khalid International Airport is north of the city, and the drive to the business districts is not short. Ride-hailing works, but during big conferences prices can jump and waits get longer. If you would rather have a driver waiting with your name on a sign, send us your flight number and destination on WhatsApp and we will confirm a price before you land. Riyadh transfers are quoted individually rather than from our fixed-fare list. See Riyadh taxi for details.
3. Get connected on arrival
Saudi mobile networks are fast with wide coverage. A local SIM or eSIM bought on arrival is usually far cheaper than roaming, and you will want data, as many everyday services run through apps.
Timing your days
A simple rule of thumb: double your expected drive time during the morning and evening peaks. Mornings fill up as offices open; evenings fill up as they close and people head to the malls. If you have several meetings in a day, group the ones that are close together rather than crossing the city back and forth.
The Riyadh Metro now covers parts of the city and can be handy if your hotel and office sit on the same line, so check the route map before you rely on it. If you are visiting several sites in one day, a private car is still the most flexible option.
In the room: etiquette that makes a good first impression
- Warm-up time is part of the meeting: conversations often open with greetings, coffee and dates. Jumping straight to numbers can feel abrupt.
- Dress conservatively and professionally: a suit or smart, modest business wear suits government offices and large companies; tech firms tend to be more relaxed.
- Mind prayer times: some organisations pause briefly for prayer, so factor this in when proposing times.
- Follow up personally: a short thank-you message after the meeting goes a long way, and relationships matter as much as the paperwork.
Fitting an Umrah between meetings
Many Muslim business travellers use a Riyadh trip as a chance to perform Umrah. The quickest route is normally a domestic flight from Riyadh to Jeddah followed by a car from the airport to Makkah. Our driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight, and gives you 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. The full details are on our Jeddah Airport to Makkah transfer page.
Remember that anyone intending Umrah must enter ihram before passing the miqat. When flying in, this is usually done on the plane or before boarding, so keep your ihram clothes in your hand luggage.
| Route | Sedan | Family | VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeddah Airport to Makkah | 200 SAR | 350 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Makkah to Jeddah Airport | 190 SAR | 300 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Jeddah Airport to anywhere in Jeddah | 150 SAR | 250 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Riyadh to Makkah by road | Confirmed on WhatsApp | Confirmed on WhatsApp | Confirmed on WhatsApp |
Fares are per car, not per passenger, and are paid on arrival. If you also have a meeting in Jeddah, the city is about 80 km from Makkah.
Questions business travellers ask us
Should I rent a car and drive myself in Riyadh?
It is possible if you are comfortable with multi-lane highways and complex interchanges. First-time visitors usually find a driver less stressful, especially as it removes the hunt for parking.
When is the best time of year for a business trip?
The cooler months from autumn to spring are easiest for getting around and for outdoor events, and they host many of the big conferences and exhibitions. Summer is very hot, but office life carries on indoors.
Can I do Umrah and fly back to Riyadh the same day?
It can work if the flight times line up, but staying one night in Makkah is much more comfortable. Send us your landing and departure times and we will suggest a realistic plan.
How much is a transfer within Riyadh?
Riyadh rides are priced by distance and timing, so we confirm them on WhatsApp before booking instead of listing a fixed number here.
Do I need to tip drivers?
Tipping is not expected for a fixed-fare transfer. It is entirely up to you.
