How Far Is Makkah From Jeddah Airport? Kilometres and Drive Time

"How many kilometres is it from Jeddah Airport to Makkah?" is one of the first questions pilgrims send us before they fly. The short answer: roughly 100 km from King Abdulaziz International Airport to the central area around the Grand Mosque, and usually 60 to 75 minutes by car. That figure is not fixed, though. This article explains what makes the trip longer or shorter and how to estimate when you will actually reach your hotel or the Haram.

Why the Distance Varies Slightly

The approximate figure shifts a little depending on two things: where you leave the airport, and where your ride ends in Makkah.

  • Your starting point: the airport is large and has more than one terminal. Getting from some terminals to the expressway adds a few kilometres compared with others.
  • Your end point: a hotel in Aziziyah or Shisha is different from one next to the Haram, and access to the central area is sometimes governed by special traffic arrangements.
  • The route: the Jeddah-Makkah expressway is standard, and a local driver knows when one entrance into the city is better than another.

What Changes the Drive Time

The highway itself is fast and straightforward. Delays tend to happen at the ends, not the middle: leaving the airport and approaching Makkah. The main factors are:

FactorEffect on timing
Arriving late at night or before dawnUsually the quickest run, close to an hour
Normal daytime hoursRoughly 60 to 75 minutes
Ramadan, especially the last ten nightsNoticeable congestion near the city entrances and the central area
School holidays and FridaysExtra time as you get closer to the Haram
Passport control and baggageNot part of the drive, but delays your departure

A simple way to estimate: time to clear the airport, plus 60 to 75 minutes on the road, plus a buffer if you are arriving in a busy season.

Practical Points for Pilgrims

Ihram before you land

If you are flying in for Umrah, you enter ihram when the plane passes the miqat rather than waiting until after landing in Jeddah. Most pilgrims therefore walk out of the terminal already in ihram and want to head straight to Makkah. Having a car ready means the relatively short drive passes calmly, with no waiting around.

Hotel first, or the Haram first?

Some pilgrims prefer to drop their bags at the hotel and then go for tawaf; others ask to be let off close to the mosque. Tell the driver in advance so he can plan the route. If going straight to the mosque is your plan, read our guide on the Jeddah Airport to Haram journey.

Luggage and passengers

A sedan suits two or three people with medium bags. A family with large suitcases and a pushchair needs a family SUV or van. Choosing correctly at the start saves an uncomfortable ride.

Other Distances Travellers Ask About

  • Jeddah city to Makkah: about 80 km.
  • Jeddah Airport to Madinah: about 420 km, a drive of several hours.
  • Makkah to Taif: about 90 km via the Al Hada road.
  • Makkah to Madinah: about 450 km, around 4.5 to 5 hours.

The Other Way: How Much Time to Allow for the Airport Run

The distance is the same on the way back, but the calculation is different because a departure time cannot wait for you. Leave your Makkah hotel early enough to cover the drive, airport check-in and security, plus a buffer in busy seasons or if your hotel is inside the central area, where getting out can take longer. For international flights, arriving at the airport around three hours before departure is a common rule of thumb, and less for domestic flights, but always follow your airline's own guidance.

Book your return ride from Makkah at least a day ahead and tell us your flight number and departure time, and we will suggest a sensible pickup time.

What to Send Us on WhatsApp Before You Fly

  1. Flight number, date and arrival time.
  2. Number of passengers and bags, and whether you have children or elderly travellers.
  3. Your hotel in Makkah or your preferred drop-off point.
  4. The vehicle type you would like.

Your driver then tracks the flight and waits in arrivals with a name sign, with 60 minutes of free waiting after landing.
