Madinah to Jeddah by Road: Distance, Drive Time and Stops

Many visitors end their trip in Madinah and then head to Jeddah, either to fly home from its airport or to spend a few days on the coast first. The first question is always the same: how far is it, and how long does the drive really take? The short answer is about 420 km, usually 4 to 4.5 hours by car. That figure moves depending on where exactly you start and finish and when you set off, so this guide breaks it down.

The distance depends on the address

The 420 km figure is an approximation, typically measured from Madinah's central area to Jeddah. In practice there are three common end points:

  • King Abdulaziz International Airport: it sits in the north of Jeddah, on the side you approach from Madinah, so it is relatively quick to reach compared with the city centre.
  • North Jeddah and the Corniche: close to the city's northern entrance and reasonable to reach outside rush hour.
  • Central and south Jeddah: the extra distance and city traffic can add half an hour or more at busy times.

What makes the drive longer

Stops

One stop for prayer and another for a rest or a meal typically add 20–40 minutes. The highway has service stations with mosques, restrooms and food, and you can ask to stop whenever you need.

Getting into Jeddah

The intercity highway flows freely for most of the day, but the approaches into Jeddah get congested in the evenings and at weekends.

Season

During Ramadan and holiday periods traffic is heavier along the whole route, so build in a bigger margin.

When to leave if you have a flight

A workable rule: take the road time (around 4.5 hours including a short stop), add the check-in time your airline asks for, then add at least an hour of buffer. For an international flight departing at 8 pm, for example, leaving your Madinah hotel at around 2 pm is comfortable. Send us your departure time and we will suggest a pickup time.

If your flight is very early in the morning, a night drive is worth considering. Roads are usually quieter after dark, and many travellers prefer to sleep in the car and arrive with time to spare rather than book a final night in a Jeddah hotel.

What a private car costs

A private car on this road is priced per car, not per passenger, starting from 450 SAR in a sedan whether you are going into Jeddah or to the airport. Fares for each class and booking are on our Madinah to Jeddah taxi page.

A sample timeline

Say you leave a hotel near the Prophet's Mosque at 9 am after breakfast. You are on the open highway within half an hour, stop for Dhuhr prayer and a light lunch somewhere along the way, and reach north Jeddah or the airport in the early afternoon. Heading to a hotel in central or south Jeddah instead, you might arrive closer to mid-afternoon depending on traffic. Leave after Asr and the same trip ends in the evening rush, so allow longer.

Car or train?

The Haramain high-speed railway also links Madinah and Jeddah and is a quick option if you travel light. But both stations lie outside the central areas, so you need one ride to Madinah station and another from the Jeddah station to your final address, carrying bags in between. A car takes you from hotel door to hotel door, or straight to the departures kerb, which is why families and anyone with elderly relatives or a lot of luggage tend to prefer it. If you do take the train, you can book a Madinah taxi to the station and a Jeddah taxi from the other end.

Travelling with children or older relatives

Four hours in a car is easy for most adults but can feel long for small children and elderly passengers. A few simple arrangements make a real difference:

  • When in doubt, size up: a family car gives more legroom and keeps the luggage behind the passengers rather than at their feet.
  • Plan one proper break around the halfway point: a single relaxed stop is usually better than several rushed ones.
  • Request a child seat in advance: mention the child's age when you book.
  • Wheelchairs: if you carry a folding wheelchair, say so, so its space in the boot is accounted for.
  • Water and snacks: bring enough for the children, since service stations are not evenly spaced.

If your journey starts in Makkah rather than Madinah, the distance to Jeddah is far shorter; see taxi in Makkah.

Before you set off

  • Pack the night before and keep a small bag with you for passports, medicines and a charger.
  • Carrying Zamzam water? Tell us in advance so a car with enough boot space is sent.
  • Finish hotel checkout about 15 minutes before the driver arrives.
  • Ihram applies to those heading to Makkah for Umrah, not to a trip that ends in Jeddah, so there is nothing to prepare on that front for this drive.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is Madinah to Jeddah by car?

Around 4 hours without long stops, stretching to 4.5–5 hours with rest breaks or heavy traffic entering Jeddah.

Is the airport closer than central Jeddah?

Coming from Madinah, usually yes, because the airport lies in the north of the city on the approach road.

Can we travel overnight?

Yes. The service runs 24/7, and night-time roads are generally quieter, which suits early-morning flights.

Can we stop somewhere specific on the way?

Yes. Mention it when booking or tell the driver. Reasonable short stops do not change the fare.
