How Far Is Makkah from Jeddah? Kilometres and Real Drive Times

The short answer

Central Jeddah is about 80 km from Makkah. Start from King Abdulaziz International Airport in the north of Jeddah and it's closer to 100 km. In normal traffic the drive takes roughly 60 to 75 minutes. That covers most people's question, but if you're timing a flight or a planned Umrah you need more than one number, and the rest of this guide fills in the detail.

Why the number changes

Jeddah stretches a long way down the coast, and Makkah's hotels sit both right around the Haram and in districts further out. So "the distance between the two cities" really means the distance between two particular points:

  • From the airport: it's in the north, so you cross part of Jeddah first, which brings the trip to roughly 100 km.
  • From south Jeddah or Al Balad: the closest part of the city to the Makkah road, often under 80 km.
  • To the central area hotels: the last few kilometres before the Haram can take longer than you'd expect because of pedestrians, buses and traffic management.
  • To Aziziyah or Shawqiyah: usually easier to reach than the streets right around the Haram.

Real-world drive times

ConditionsApprox. time, Jeddah to a Makkah hotel
Late night or early morning on a normal dayabout 1 hour
Normal daytime60–75 minutes
Thursday evening and Fridayadd 30 minutes or more
Ramadan (especially the last ten nights) and peak seasonssometimes over 2 hours

These are estimates, not promises. Accidents and temporary diversions can change them. A safe rule is to add 30 to 45 minutes of buffer to anything time-critical.

The two directions aren't the same trip

Going to Makkah usually follows a landing or is timed for a prayer, and the main hold-up is getting into the central area. Heading back to Jeddah, the usual bottleneck is leaving the Haram area as a prayer ends, then rush-hour traffic at Jeddah's entrances. That's why drivers often suggest leaving Makkah between prayers rather than straight after one.

If you're coming from outside the miqat boundaries with the intention of Umrah, you need to enter ihram before passing the miqat. Air travellers normally do this on the plane before the miqat line, and Jeddah residents enter ihram where they are. These are general points; for specifics, ask a qualified scholar.

What the distance costs

Our fares are fixed for the whole car and do not depend on traffic or the number of passengers. A sedan from Jeddah to Makkah starts from 200 SAR, and you can see every class and book on our taxi from Jeddah to Makkah page.

Car or train?

The Haramain train is a fast link between the two cities, but it runs from station to station. Add the time to reach Jeddah station, the wait for your departure, and the transfer from Makkah station to your hotel. For a solo traveller with a small bag, the train can work very well. A family with lots of luggage saves several changes with a private car. We also run rides to the train stations in both Jeddah and Makkah if you want to combine the two.

Planning around the distance

A few habits make the trip predictable. Send your driver your exact hotel name rather than just "near the Haram", since many hotels share similar names. If you're landing at night, remember that the airport pickup includes 60 minutes of free waiting after touchdown, so you don't need to rush through immigration. And if you're heading on to Madinah later, plan that leg separately: it's a much longer drive of around 4.5 to 5 hours.

Common questions

Is the airport the same distance from Makkah as the city?

No. The airport is roughly 20 km further because it's in the north of Jeddah, which can add a quarter of an hour or more depending on traffic in Jeddah.

What's the best time to leave Jeddah?

Early morning and late night are usually the quietest. Avoid Thursday evening if you can.

Does the price go up if traffic makes the trip longer?

No. The fare is fixed and agreed before you travel, and you pay on arrival.

Can we stop on the way?

Yes. Let the driver know in advance if you need a short stop for prayer or supplies.
