Before Jeddah spread north with its towers and expressways, the whole city sat inside a wall around what is now called Al Balad. For centuries, pilgrims arriving by sea landed here before continuing to Makkah, and the merchants who served them built tall houses from coral stone cut from the Red Sea reefs, fronted with carved wooden balconies. Historic Jeddah was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014, and restoration work has continued since.
Rather than retell its history, this article suggests how to actually visit in half a day, whether you are already in Jeddah or coming from Makkah after Umrah.
When to go
Jeddah is humid most of the year, so the cooler months from November to March are best for walking. Whatever the season, go after the afternoon prayer: the sun is gentler, shops reopen, and the lanes come alive toward sunset. During Ramadan the evenings have a special atmosphere, with street food and cheerful crowds.
A half-day walking route
- Start at a gate: ask your driver to drop you at one of the entrances near the main road, as cars cannot enter the inner lanes.
- Nassif House: one of Al Balad's best-known buildings, associated with King Abdulaziz, who stayed there when he entered Jeddah. Look for the broad staircase and the latticed facade, and check opening times before you go.
- Souk Al Alawi: the old commercial spine, lined with spice sellers, incense, fabric and dates. Take your time; this is the best place for gifts to take home.
- Al Shafi'i Mosque: one of Jeddah's oldest mosques, restored in its traditional style. If prayer time comes, pray here.
- Finish on a rooftop: several restored houses are now cafés overlooking the minarets and balconies, perfect at sunset.
What makes the architecture special
The roshan (plural rawashin) is more than decoration. These projecting wooden screens let the sea breeze into the rooms, block direct sun, and allowed families privacy while looking onto the street. The coral stone in the walls also helps keep interiors cooler. As you walk, look up: the best of Al Balad is above eye level.
Getting there
Parking in Al Balad is very limited. The simplest approach is to have a driver drop you at the entrance and come back at an agreed time. Mishwar Al Haramain fares are per car, paid on arrival:
| Route | Sedan | Family | VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeddah Airport to anywhere in Jeddah | 150 SAR | 250 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Between districts within Jeddah | 100 SAR | 200 SAR | 300 SAR |
| Makkah to Jeddah | 190 SAR | 300 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Jeddah to Makkah | 200 SAR | 350 SAR | 600 SAR |
Al Balad is about 80 km from Makkah, roughly an hour in normal traffic. If you are staying in Makkah and want a day trip, book both legs in advance. For the ride back afterwards, see taxi from Jeddah to Makkah.
Adding Al Balad to an Umrah trip
Plenty of pilgrims spend their last night in Jeddah before flying home. It takes the worry out of the airport run and leaves an evening free for Al Balad. An easy plan: Makkah hotel to a Jeddah hotel around midday, Al Balad after the afternoon prayer, airport the next day. You can arrange all three rides with us in one WhatsApp conversation; city details are on our Jeddah taxi page.
Quick tips
- Wear comfortable shoes; the ground is stone and uneven.
- Carry a little cash for small shops.
- Ask before photographing people or the doors of lived-in homes.
- Some narrow lanes are hard going for wheelchairs, though the main restored paths are easier.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an entry fee?
Walking the lanes and souks is free. Some houses and museums may charge or keep their own hours, so check when you arrive.
How much time do I need?
Three to four hours is enough for a relaxed walk, some shopping and a coffee. Keen photographers may want longer.
Can I visit during a long layover at Jeddah Airport?
If you have the time and your visa allows you to leave the airport, Al Balad is one of the closest sights. Allow for traffic both ways and check exit rules on official sources.
Is it suitable for families in the evening?
Yes. It fills with families after dark, and the main paths are well lit and busy.
