The Road from Jeddah to Madinah: A Step-by-Step Journey Guide

Who takes this trip?

Plenty of visitors choose to start with Madinah rather than Makkah. Some want to pray at the Prophet's Mosque first, some arrange their programme so that Umrah comes at the end of the trip, and others arrive in Jeddah on business and then travel to Madinah to visit. Whatever the reason, the drive from Jeddah to Madinah is roughly 420 km and usually takes between four and four and a half hours by car.

Step 1: Where are you starting from?

King Abdulaziz Airport

If you are heading to Madinah straight after landing, the driver meets you in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. We track your flight, and you get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. Send us your flight number and terminal when you book.

One honest piece of advice: after a long-haul flight, four more hours on the road is a lot. If you are exhausted or travelling with very young children, a night in Jeddah and an early start the next morning can be the kinder option. We can arrange both legs.

A hotel or home in Jeddah

We arrive at your door at the agreed time. Jeddah's rush hours can add time before you reach the highway, so an early morning departure, or one after the evening peak, makes the drive smoother.

Step 2: Choose the right vehicle

  • Sedan: one to three passengers with moderate luggage.
  • Family SUV or van: families, small groups and anyone with several large suitcases.
  • VIP: extra comfort for a long drive.

You can compare the categories on our fleet page. If you are unsure, tell us how many people and suitcases you have and we will recommend the right one.

Step 3: Know the fare before you leave

The fare is fixed per car rather than per passenger, starting from 500 SAR in a sedan, and traffic or normal rest stops do not change it. You pay on arrival; class-by-class fares and booking are on our Jeddah to Madinah taxi page.

Step 4: On the road

The route follows a divided highway lined with fuel stations, rest areas and mosques. Most passengers ask for one stop to pray and grab a coffee, while families may want two. The driver stops whenever you ask, so do not hesitate. Keep your passport or ID in your hand luggage, as you may pass security checkpoints.

A few comforts worth packing in the car: water, a light snack for children, a phone charger and something warm if you are travelling at night in winter, when the air conditioning and the desert night can both be cool.

Day or night?

An early morning start gives you lighter roads and gets you to Madinah before midday, with time to rest before praying at the Prophet's Mosque. Travelling at night suits those whose flight landed late or who prefer cooler hours in summer, and the highway is served around the clock. Choose what suits the people travelling with you rather than what looks fastest on paper.

Car or train?

The Haramain railway links Jeddah and Madinah and is quick between stations. But you still need a ride from where you are staying to the station, and another from Madinah station to your hotel, lifting your luggage in and out each time. For a solo traveller with a small bag the train can work well; families with suitcases usually find a door-to-door car simpler. If you do take the train, we can collect you from Madinah station and drive you to your hotel.

Step 5: Arriving in Madinah

Most hotels close to the Prophet's Mosque are in the central area, and some roads around the mosque have managed traffic around prayer times. The driver knows the right approaches, and if stopping right at the hotel door is not possible, he will drop you at the nearest permitted point. Send us your exact hotel name, ideally with a map pin.

What comes after Madinah?

If you will travel on to Makkah for Umrah after your visit, the miqat for those coming from Madinah is Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), and the driver will stop there so you can enter ihram. That leg is covered on the Madinah to Makkah taxi page. For getting around Madinah itself and visiting its mosques and landmarks, see Madinah taxi.
