Getting a visa to visit Saudi Arabia is far simpler than it used to be; many travellers now apply online from home without visiting an embassy. But easy does not mean you should rush. A small error in your name or the wrong visa type can unsettle the whole trip. This article is not a substitute for the official source. It is a practical checklist to run through before and after you apply.
First, a caution: the rules change
Eligible nationalities, fees, validity, length of stay and insurance terms can all change. That is why we do not quote figures here. Always check the official Saudi visa portal and the Nusuk platform before you pay and before you fly.
Step 1: be precise about the purpose of your trip
- Tourism and Umrah outside Hajj season: the tourist visa generally allows Umrah outside the Hajj season. Confirm the conditions that apply on your travel dates.
- Hajj: has its own pathway and a separate visa through official channels; it cannot be performed on a tourist visa.
- Business or other visits: have different visa types. Choose the one that genuinely matches your purpose.
- Transit: some travellers passing through the Kingdom may qualify for a short transit visa. Read its conditions carefully before building plans around it.
Step 2: gather documents before you open the form
- A passport valid for a sufficient period beyond your entry date, with blank pages.
- A recent, clear photo meeting the portal's specifications.
- An email address and phone number you actually check.
- A card that works for online payments.
- Accommodation and itinerary details, if requested.
Step 3: common mistakes that cause delays
- Entering your name in a different order or spelling from your passport. Copy it letter by letter from the data page.
- A poorly lit photo or an unsuitable background.
- Applying through unofficial websites that add extra fees. Make sure you are on the government portal.
- Buying non-refundable flights before the visa is issued.
Step 4: once approved
- Save a copy of the visa on your phone and print a paper copy.
- If an insurance document is attached, keep it handy.
- If you are performing Umrah, check Nusuk for Umrah requirements and any related bookings, and for a Rawdah appointment if you will visit Madinah.
- Note your permitted length of stay and do not exceed it.
Step 5: plan your arrival day
Most visitors arrive at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. After passport control and baggage, the last thing you want is to hunt for a car. Arrange it in advance: send us your flight number and your driver will be in the arrivals hall with a name sign, with flight tracking and 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. Details are on the Jeddah airport taxi page.
| From the airport to | Sedan | Family | VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeddah Airport to Jeddah hotels | 150 SAR | 250 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Jeddah Airport to Makkah | 200 SAR | 350 SAR | 500 SAR |
| Jeddah Airport to Madinah | 500 SAR | 700 SAR | 1000 SAR |
| Madinah Airport to a Madinah hotel | 100 SAR | 200 SAR | 300 SAR |
Fares are fixed per car and paid on arrival. If you are heading straight to the Haram, see our Jeddah Airport to Haram page; for everything else, the taxi fare guide.
Practical points after you land
- Connectivity: local SIM cards can be bought at the airport and registered with your passport; useful for maps and for reaching your driver.
- Currency: the Saudi riyal is the local currency. Cards are widely accepted, though a little cash is handy.
- Weather: summers in Jeddah and Makkah are very hot, so plan outdoor activities for the morning or evening.
