In the Eastern Province, social life really starts after sunset. Once the heat of the day eases, people from Khobar, Dammam and Dhahran head for the corniche, the paths fill with families, walkers and cyclists, and the cafés and restaurants facing the Gulf light up. A night out in Khobar means a seaside stroll, a long dinner and a specialty coffee, and that is exactly why it works so well for families.
Where to walk
The waterfront and corniche
Khobar's corniche runs a long way along the shore, with lawns, walking and jogging paths and play areas for children. At the southern end stands the Khobar Water Tower, one of the city's best-known landmarks, and the area around it is a favourite for sunset photos.
Ajdan Walk
An open-air destination near the sea that brings together restaurants, cafés and shops along pedestrian lanes, with outdoor seating that becomes the hot ticket in the mild months. It is the place to go if you want plenty of choice in one spot.
What to eat
Khobar's dining is varied, thanks to its international population and its proximity to Bahrain. Rather than a list of names that may change, here is what is worth trying:
- Local seafood: hamour, safi and other Gulf fish, grilled or fried and served with sayadiya rice. Ask about the catch of the day.
- Gulf cuisine: kabsa, majboos and grills, in both simple and upscale restaurants.
- International food: Lebanese, Asian, American and more, especially around Ajdan Walk and nearby commercial streets.
- Specialty coffee: a core part of a Saudi evening out, and Khobar has plenty of local roasters and cafés.
At weekends the bigger restaurants are busiest between 8 pm and midnight, so reserve a table if you can.
When to go
Roughly November to February brings the most pleasant evenings for sitting outside, and you may want a light jacket by the water. Summer is hot and humid; head out after sunset and favour air-conditioned indoor seating. Weeknights are much calmer than Thursday and Friday.
Beyond the corniche
- King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra): in Dhahran, with exhibitions, a library, a cinema and cultural programmes. Worth half a day; check opening hours and events first.
- Malls: Khobar, Dammam and Dhahran all have large shopping centres, ideal on hot summer days.
- King Fahd Causeway: links the Eastern Province with Bahrain. If you plan to cross, check visa and entry requirements on official sources.

From Khobar to the Holy Cities
Many Eastern Province residents fit an Umrah into a short break. The easiest plan is usually a flight to Jeddah or Madinah and a car to the hotel. From Jeddah Airport to Makkah our fare is 200 SAR by sedan, 350 SAR by family vehicle and 500 SAR VIP, with the driver waiting in arrivals with a name sign and 60 minutes of free waiting. Other routes are in the taxi fare guide.
