After the Tombs and Canyons: The Road to Madinah
Many AlUla visitors end their trip with a visit to Madinah. It is the nearer of the two holy cities, and the road runs through open desert with few transport options along it. That is why most travellers, families especially, prefer a private car that collects them where they are staying in AlUla and drops them at their Madinah hotel, with no changes or stations in between. Why Start Early?
Most AlUla resorts are outside the town, some in valleys a fair way from the main road. We recommend a morning departure for three reasons: the desert road is easier in daylight, reaching Madinah before mid-afternoon gives you time to check in and get ready for prayer at the Prophet's Mosque, and you avoid the evening crush in the central area.
On the Road
Much of the route crosses sandy plains and rock formations that gradually fade as you head south. Service stations are spaced out on some stretches, and the driver knows where it makes sense to stop. If you want to pray, eat or just let the children stretch their legs, say so. Stops cost nothing extra.
Arriving in Madinah
The driver goes straight to your address. If your hotel is in the central area, some streets around the Prophet's Mosque may close around prayer times, so the driver will drop you at the nearest permitted point. Once you have settled in, our Madinah taxi page covers ziyarat and day-to-day rides.
Choosing a Car
- Sedan: one or two people with moderate luggage.
- Family SUV/van: families, or anyone carrying lots of bags after a long northern tour.
- VIP: a step up in comfort for a ride lasting several hours.
